Budgeting several baskets

The planner multiplies a contents budget by the number of baskets, adds one combined supplies amount and divides the cost among the people paying. It also shows a calendar countdown to the next October 31. The countdown is separate from the money calculation.

Choose what the per-basket amount includes before entering it. You can include the container with each basket or put the combined container cost in extras, but do not count it in both places. The same rule applies to treats, tags, wrapping and delivery.

Adding costs and rounding shares

Multiply the budget per basket by the number you are making. Add the total shared supplies and other extras once. Shared does not mean the price remains fixed at every basket count: you may need another pack of containers or tags when the number increases. Update that input using your actual shopping quantities.

Divide the combined cost by the contributors. The displayed average has two decimal places, so it may round a fraction of a cent. The payable contribution rounds upward to the selected increment: cents, one dollar or five dollars. Multiply that payable amount by the contributors to obtain the collection total.

Subtracting the cost from the collection gives the surplus. With a $100 total split three ways, the average displays as $33.33 but each cent-rounded contribution is $33.34. The collection is $100.02, leaving two cents. This avoids showing a collection that cannot be reproduced by the displayed payments.

One contributor simply pays the full cost when the cent increment is selected. Choosing a coarser increment can produce a surplus even for one person. That extra amount is a planned funding margin, not an increase in the underlying basket cost.

Worked basket plans

Four baskets at $30 each plus $12 of combined supplies cost $132. With one contributor and the cent increment, the payable amount is $132. The collection matches the cost and no surplus remains.

Eight baskets at $12 each plus $15 of supplies cost $111. Two contributors using a five-dollar increment pay $60 each. The collection totals $120 and leaves $9. Choosing the cent increment instead gives $55.50 each, with no surplus.

Twenty baskets at $8 each plus $20 of combined supplies cost $180. One contributor using the cent increment pays $180. If the supplies rise because the larger batch needs additional packs, update the $20 input rather than assuming the previous supplies total still applies.

Countdown and practical limits

The countdown counts whole UTC calendar dates from today to the next October 31, including zero on that date. Your local calendar date can differ near midnight. The countdown does not change the budget, calculate a delivery date or allow for a seller's preparation time.

It is not a shipping deadline. Use the actual seller and carrier information for an order you intend to send. The calculator has no destination, service level, dispatch date or transit-time input from which to calculate an arrival promise.

The money calculation assumes equal contributions and equally budgeted baskets. For different basket prices, sum their contents costs separately and enter that sum as one budget item with one recipient. Do not then multiply the combined sum by the basket count again.

Enter whole numbers for baskets and contributors and at most two decimal places for dollar amounts. Zero extras is valid; a blank extras field needs completion. Agree how to handle a surplus, and recalculate if a contributor drops out. Rounding is not guaranteed to cover an unpaid share.

FAQ

Common questions

Does rounding cover someone who does not pay?

Not necessarily. The collection assumes every listed contributor pays the displayed amount. Recalculate with confirmed contributors or change the cost if participation changes.

Can one person cover extras separately?

Yes, but exclude those separately funded costs from this shared calculation and record them separately. The result then covers only the remaining equal collection.
